History Index One way in which Kasr El

One way in which Kasr El-Aini contributed to the advancement of medicine in Egypt was by setting up the School of Midwivesin 1838. The well-trained midwives graduating from this school gradually replaced the ignorant midwives who had hitherto practiced from experience, often making fatal mistakes until they gained such experience.

One of the great things Kasr El-Aini prides itself on is the opening of the first childbirth and midwives hospital in the East. Learning at this school lasted for 5 years. The president was a noble lady who had been granted the first prize in a Paris competition. She was called Mrs. Lwelon. This school served Egypt greatly. Monsieur Scott wrote in his report to the Minister of Education in France in 1868 (80 years after it was constructed) : «The graduates of this school were distributed among the different places in Egypt where they worked for nothing. They were very successful and they helped the government overcome great dificulties in order to generalize vaccination against smallpox. They used to vacculate about 6000 - 7000 in Cairo. This school put an end to the ignorant midwives.
